    Description

Military Pin WW 1, USS Leviathan - Largest Military Transport of WW1 - Infamous. Condition is "Used". Shipped with USPS First Class.
The Leviathan started it's life in 1914 as the Vaterland, a German made Cruise ship. One of the largest ships of it's day.
It could cruse at 22 knots. It was seized by the US while in port in the US and turned into a US Troop Transport during WW1. It was said to have carried 90,000 troops from the US to France so was really key to winning the war.  However on one voyage in 1918 men were marched to the ship who were sick with the Spanish Flu and the ship left port in Hoboken with over 9000 troops aboard in route to France.  Over 1000 men had to be carried off the ship once it reached France due to the flu. Many died on the ship. The ship was the perfect melting pot for the flu.  Humphrey Bogart served on the Leviathan. I have to think this ship pin is quite rare.
