THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO RAIDERS-A BAND OF GALLANT FIGHTERS WHO HAVE SHOWN THE JAPANES THAT HE IS NO LONGER MASTER OF THE JUNGLE. This book could not have been written without the generous co-operation of two of Brigadier Wingate's senior officers, Major John B. Jefferies and Squadron Leader Robert Thompson, who devoted precious days of leave to telling me the story of the expedition. Several episodes in the campaign have been described in their own words. Orde Charles Wingate (born February 26, 1903 Naini Tal, India - Died March 24, 1944 Burma) British soldier, an outstanding 'irregular' commander and unconventional personage in the tradition of General Charles George Gordon and Colonel T. E. Lawrence  ('Lawrence of Arabia') His 'Chindits' or 'Wingate's' Raiders', A brigade of British, Gurkha, and Burmese Guerrillas, harassed much stronger Japanese forces in the jungles of northern Burma during World War II. Wingate was given command  as acting major general  of airborne troops invading central Burma in March 1944, Wingate served the important Mandalay-Mytkyina railing, but soon afterward he was killed in an airplane crash.
